East Reservoir Project

Design by Town of Didsbury, Community Services

 BACKGROUND:

The Town’s Butte potable water reservoir volume is 2,270 m3 and the Town’s average daily demand ranges seasonally between 1200 m3 and 2000 m3 . The reservoir pumping capacity is approximately 140 m3 /hour. Over the past three years the pumps run at an average of 63 m3 /hour. Over the same time period, the pumps reach the maximum delivery capacity 25% of the days. As the town continues to develop and grow, Council and Administration are committed to ensuring that our infrastructure is able to meet these growing needs.

The WDMP recommended a second reservoir be constructed in the eastern area of the Town (east of the tracks) with designated fire pumps added to both pumphouses. The East Reservoir remains the utility’s top priority project. The WDMP divides the East Reservoir into roughly three phases:

  • Phase one is a new 2,250 m3 potable water storage facility with a pump house. The new reservoir is sized to address the Town’s current needs and the 15-year population projection (3.9% growth).
  • Phase two is a multi-year watermain program to connect the reservoir to the existing network and maximize its delivery capacity. This phase is location sensitive and is to install larger diameter mains which connect to 15 Avenue, north through 16 Street, and then east to connect to the larger diameter main from the west side of Town, under CPR (approximately 22 Ave).
  • Phase three is a future phase which will see an additional 2,250 m3 of storage constructed. Phase three would be necessary as the town’s population and/or average daily demand once again approaches one of the Alberta Environment triggers for expanded capacity.

Construction of the reservoir started very quickly after Council approved the awarding of the project contract on April 22, 2025. It is expected to be operational by November 2026.

Exciting news! Work on Didsbury's East Reservoir has begun.

Mayor Rhonda Hunter and Councillors Dorothy Moore and Bill Windsor were on hand to 'break ground' on this much-needed infrastructure project.

This project is located on the west end of the south parking lot of the Didsbury Memorial Complex (1702 21 St).

Note: The back alley to the south and the street to the north of the site will be closed while digging is happening. We anticipate that the closure will be in place until winter. The street directly in front of the Complex will remain open. Signage will be in place.
